Access the ISE Lab Apps Server remotely
Last Updated 2 years ago

Accessing the ISE Lab Apps Server for the first time

Request access to the server by browsing to https://apps.ise.vt.edu and submitting an I.T. Ticket.

*Use the campus network or Pulse Secure VPN to access the labapps server.

You will need to have the Microsoft Remote Desktop app installed. For Windows 10 users, this is installed on your system by default. For MacOS users, while there is usually an RDP app installed by default it does not usually work well for this purpose. Instead, you will want to download the other Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the app store. ChromeOS users should download the app from the Android Play Store.

Browse to https://labapps.ise.vt.edu/RDWeb and sign in with your hokies account using the format hokies\username in the username field.

From the apps webpage, single-click on the app(s) that you want to run and wait a few seconds for it to setup the session.

The first time you select an app, you will need to accept the security certificate.

The system will download an RDP file linked to the App you selected. You can double-click the downloaded file, or to have it open seamlessly:

  1. At the bottom of the page where it shows what file had been downloaded, click on the arrow next to the file.
  2. Select Always open files of this type.

If you do not or are not presented with this option, you will have to double-click on the downloaded rdp file each time that you run an app from the webpage or load the file directly into your MS Remote Desktop App.

You should be up and running. You can run multiple apps from the server at the same time and they will work the same as a local app except that they will have access to both your local file space and the server's file space. Profile spaces (Desktop, Downloads, Documents, ...) are private for each user, but share available free space.

Submit an I.T. Ticket if you have any trouble.
