Frequently Asked Question
First, you must put in an I.T. ticket (https://apps.ise.vt.edu/tickets) requesting RDP access to a particular machine. For students, this must be done by your supporting faculty. The ticket needs to include the hostname of the computer to be accessed, as well as the name and username of the person who is to gain access. To determine hostname, enter hostname from a command prompt on the target system. This is often the asset number of the machine in the format of VT000XXXXXX.
Once the ticket is processed, you will receive an emailed response from the ticket system letting you know that it is ready and/or if there is an issue. Direct replies and questions directly to the ticket email.
To access the remote machine, you must either be on the local Ethernet network or Wireless, or have installed and activated Pulse Secure VPN (https://vt4help.service-now.com/sp?id=kb_article&sys_id=d5496fca0f8b4200d3254b9ce1050ee5).
Once you are connected either locally or through Pulse Secure VPN, load the Microsoft Remote Desktop App using the following settings to connect to the remote system:
Computer/Host: hostname.cntrlsrvs.w2k.vt.edu
Username: hokies\your_username
Password: your_vt_passphrase
Note that there are advanced settings that will allow you to specify screen size, as well as whether to share your local drives, USB devices, and clipboard. The default settings as preferred.
